Frequently Asked Questions about
Above Ground Swimming Pools

Can I install an above ground pool on concrete?

Yes, that is usually a very nice way to go. Hopefully your concrete is level. If not you will need to shim the low areas for the supports. Placing the pool on concrete will give you a nice smooth bottom and means you will never have to worry about vegetation growing thru your liner. There are two things to consider a must for this type of installation. The first is to use preformed pool coves. These are wedge shaped 4' lengths of Styrofoam. They cover the bottom rail of the pool around the outer edge. The second is some type of pool pad for the liner to rest on. Indoor outdoor carpeting, thick felt or pool pads, like the "Happy Bottom", work fine.

Can I put a deep end on the pool?

Yes, most oval pools can have a deep end up to 6 feet as per manufacturers discretion.

Can I stand on the top rails?

NO! Besides the damage this will do to the above ground swimming pool's structure, standing/walking on a slippery top rail is a recipe for disaster.

Can the warranty be voided for my above ground pool?

The warranty is null and void if the design of this product is altered. The product must be assembled according to factory directions and no changes made in any of the parts. If the purchaser fails to comply with instructions pertaining to assembly, care and maintenance as outlined in detail in Cantar's installation manual. The warranty is voided if the pool is left standing without water, exposing the liner to direct sunlight for a period in excess of 1 day. If it is necessary to drain water from the pool it should be refilled the same day.

Does my pool have to sit on level ground?

Yes, that is probably the most important part of pool building. Use a laser level for the entire pool area and then again for each individual upright. Always dig dirt away from the higher ground, and never add dirt to the lower ground to level the pool area.

How do I know if I have an overlap liner or a beaded liner?

Overlap liners are the most common. They fold over the top of the pool wall and are held in place by coping and metal rods. If you look under your top rail from the outside of the pool and see liner hanging over, you have an overlap liner. A beaded liner fits into a groove on the inside of the pool wall. There will be no liner showing on the outside

How do you install the Happy Bottom Pool Pad?

HappyBottom® Pool Pad is easy to install. First, roll out sections of pad and cut them one foot longer than the (biggest if oval) dimension of the pool. Next, seam enough 4 ft. wide sections together with Sure Seam Tape to cover the (smaller if oval) dimension of the pool. Finally, flip pad over so tape is facing the ground and build the entire pool on top of the pad. Trim off excess pad material after pool has been filled.

How long do I need to run my filter system?

The filter system should run for a minimum of 8 hours every 24 hours.

How often should I backwash my filter?

The filter should be backwashed at least weekly and whenever the filter gauge reads 10 lbs. higher than what it does after backwashing and rinsing the filter.

How should I fill my new above ground pool?

Water haulers will normally charge between $50.00 and $75.00 for 2,000 gallons of water. They will pump it directly into your pool and normally it just takes a few loads and you can be swimming the same day. The kids like that. You could also fill it from a garden hose on your house, just be prepared for an elevated utility bill the next month.

Is it possible to bury an above ground pool in the ground?

Burying an above ground swimming pool would result in the voiding of your warranty with most manufacturers. Yes it could be done. Fill your pool up with water and wait a few days to see if there are any leaks. If there aren't any leaks, then back fill the dirt against the wall. You may want to spray on a extra layer of moisture protection to protect the wall from the chemicals in the dirt prior to back filling. Leaving at least a foot out of the ground, 6" minimum. The ground on the outside of the pool tends to cave in without the weight of the water pushing against it. You should also dig the hole at least 3' bigger than the pool all the way around to facilitate installation. And never, ever, leave the pool sit empty.

What are pool coves?

A pool cove is needed to keep the weight of the water in the pool liner from causing it to balloon out under the bottom of the pool wall. Previously, pool cove had to be hand built, in place, using tons of sand or dirt. Liner failures due to cove washout were all too common. Corrosion occurs rapidly where metal components, at the bottom of the pool, come in contact with moisture in the sand or dirt. Hand formed coves are uneven, with hand or shoe prints, making cleaning difficult.

What are the benefits of a pool cove?

A Pool cove becomes part of your pool to seal the space between the wall and the liner and to prevent liner strain. Made from chemically-neutral foam, it helps fight corrosion. It's compatible with all vinyl liners. Eliminates the need for banking of sand, otherwise used to create a sealed barrier between the wall and liner. Accommodates wall stretch to help prevent liner tearing and leaking. Fights corrosion to add years to a pool's life expectancy. Will not erode or freeze; holds its shape indefinitely.

What can I do to make sure the warranty for my above ground pool is not voided?

Carefully read, observe and follow cautions in the installation manual in order to avoid inadvertent damage.

What do I need to do to my pool in the winter?

Prior to freezing you should drain the filter system completely of all water as to prevent freezing. Remove all hoses from the pool. The return line may require a threaded plug on the inside of the pool to prevent accessive draining of water. You can also drain the water level down below the skimmer to help prevent the skimmer from freezing and breaking. Removing the hose from the skimmer can allow any additional melted snow or rain water to drain out of the pool onto the ground. Care should be taken to prevent excessive water run-off.

What does an above ground pool warranty cover?

The Cantar warranty covers the pool only. Other equipment such as ladders, filters, slides, heaters and maintenance equipment are not supplied by Cantar. Their warranties should be found in their respective sartons.

What is a Happy Bottom Pool Pad?

HappyBottom® Pool Pad can add years of life to a pool and its liner. Made from a special high density polyethylene foam, HappyBottom® Pool Pad comes in 1/4" x 48" x 150ft. roll and acts as a vapor barrier to keep potentially harmful water away from metal components. In addition, liner failure due to puncture is minimized and heat retention is improved. A smooth, easy to clean bottom and reduced indentations are just a few of the benefits of using HappyBottom® Pool Pad.

What is the correct water level in my pool?

The water level in a swimming pool should be at the center of the through the wall skimmer.

What type of above ground swimming pool is stronger a round or oval?

It used to be that round above ground pools were stronger, but with today's materials, manufacturing and advanced engineering, there really is no great difference in overall strength between the two styles.

Which pool type has more swimming area round or oval?

A ROUND shaped swimming pool has more swimming area than an oval shaped pool of the same length. For example: a 21' round has more area than a 12' x 24' oval and usually costs LESS!

Which wall type is more likely to rust out? Steel or Aluminum?

Both wall types are susceptible to rust. A pool walls ability to resist rust is determined by it's level of corrosion resistance. When aluminum rusts it is called oxidation.

Will I be able to install an above ground pool on my own?

If you can are good at following instructions you should have no problem installing an above ground pool. Even so, it should be noted that you'll probably need at least two sets of hands for some of the more awkward steps involved. So find yourself a helper before you get started to make things easier.
