Are solar blankets used to heat the pool, or retain the heat?

Pool covers are mostly good for retaining heat. Most heat loss from a pool is from evaporation from the surface - over 95%. The cover will keep over 90% of the heat in the pool. A pool cover will help to attract a small amount of heat, but it is no substitute for a heater. If you use a heater, then a cover will save over 50% of the heating cost. If you use solar, which works in almost all geographic areas, then the cover will retain the heat overnight and allow the solar to bring the pool up to the 80's in 1 to 3 days. Liquid covers (Tropical Fish) work about 50% as well as plastic covers

Is it too expensive to heat a pool every day?

It depends on what you are using to heat your pool. Solar heating systems cost nothing to run since they get their heat from the sun which of course is free. Gas heaters, especially these days, can be quite expensive. The annual cost of electricity to run a heat pump may be two thirds of the cost of natural gas or one third the cost of electricity for a conventional resistance electric heater. For best results always cover your pool, especially at night with a solar blanket to retain the heat.

Why should I use a pool cover?

Pool covers provide many benefits beside the tremendous energy savings. They conserve water by reducing the amount of make-up water needed by 30-50%. They can reduce chemical consumption by 35-60%. They also cut cleaning time by keeping dirt and other debris out of the water. We are not talking about covers used during the winter months when the pool is usually not being used. These do not save energy, however they do keep your pool clean
