Masonry Sand Volume Chart for Above Ground Pool Liner Installations

It is commonly recommended by both pool and pool liner manufacturers that there should be at least 2 inches of mansonry sand underneath the liner. This sand helps protect the liner during normal expected use.

Masonry sand is highly recommended as it is washed, and sifted to get uniform sized grains. It is free of jagged rocks and other debris. It also compacts well when wetted by water and tamped down just before overlaying it with the liner (and/or Liner Padding).

Below is a chart for the amount of sand that you should buy to obtain 2 inches based on the most common sized above ground pools.

Try to order by the yard if possible.  Volume is more accurate than weight.  Sand could have a high content of moisture and therefore weigh more.  Always round up the next higher amount if they will not deliver 1/2 yards.   There will generally be sand left over after the installation.

NOTE - VERY IMPORTANT:   Always insist on masonry sand!  Sand must not contain any rocks, stones, pebbles, twigs, trash, grass, etc.  It must be pure, fine masonry sand.
