Questions & Answers about Pool Size 18ft x 33ft Oval Above Ground

Q:

Do I really need a winter pool cover?

A:

It depends. Technically you do not "have" to close your pool up or even cover the pool for the winter. You could live in a termporate area in the winter time and therefore you could leave your pool running all year long. If you live in a climate where it is possible that the exposed pipes or the top of the pool water could ice over, you should close your pool and cover it. A winter cover protects your investment by blocking debris that could damage the liner, eliminates leaves and debris that could start to decay and stain the pool or liner, save money on balancing the water chemicals, save money on water loss due to evaporation, blocks UV sunlight that could allow algea to grow since water chemicals aren't being circulated and renewed, and greatly reduces the time to get your pool back to swim ready in the spring time when you open up the pool.

Q:

How do I choose the right size winter pool cover for my pool? What is the right size winter cover for my in-ground pool?

A:

You absolutely need to know the size of your in-ground pool. Measure your pool from the inside edge to the inside edge to get the exact length and width (for oval or rectangular pools) or the diameter (for round pools). If you have steps, or swimouts, etc. that extend the length of width from the main part of the pool add those dimension to your overall LxW. If you have an irregular shaped pool (kidney, custom), then you will need to imagine the largest rectangle that will completely cover the pool and that will be your LxW. The LxW that you have is your "Pool Size" and you need to remember it.

Winter covers are sold based on your pool's size, not the cover's actual dimensions. The cover is usually 4-5ft longer and wider than the pool. This usually allows enough cover to float on top of the water in the pool, come up the sides, and have at least 12 inches (1ft ) of the cover to lay flat on the deck and be held in place with water tubes. This is called the "overlap".

Now you can search for a pool cover that is made for the "Pool" size you have. If there is not one for the your exact pool size, then find the next pool size that is larger. EX: if your pool is a 16x32ft pool and doesn't have extra pool steps extending either the length or width, then you will look for winter pool covers for a 16x32ft pool. Now if you have steps on the end of the pool that extends the water past the 16x32ft rectangular shape of your pool by 3ft, then your pool size is now a 16x35ft pool. The next standard pool size they usually make a winter pool cover is 18x36ft and this becomes the cover you should get for your pool. Any extra cover material on top of the deck can be folded up and under the water tubes for a neat and tidy appearance.

Q:

What types of winter pool covers are available for my Pool?

A:

Here is a list of the most common types of pools covers:

  • Solid winter pool cover - (tarp-like polyethylene or vinyl) blocks all light and debris - best at stopping algae growth but requires a pump to remove accumulated water or snow melt.
  • Mesh winter pool cover - lighter with drainage built-in; let rain/melt through but block larger debris. Easier to manage, but fine dirt particles and some silt may still get in.
  • Leaf Nets - is a light weight mesh cover, usually placed directly over a winter cover, that is used to collect and remove most of the leaves during the fall
  • Safety Covers (mesh & solid) - similar to a winter cover but it has a bonus as it is strong enough to prevent children, pets, and adults from accidentally falling into the water. A safety cover is secured tightly to the deck using anchors and springs.

Close your pool properly this fall and insure a sparkling clean pool next spring with Arctic Armor's Winterizing Kit, featuring Blue Wave chemicals. All kits include free pool closing instructions.

Cover Clips

Cover Clips grip your top rail like a clothespin and hold your cover on tightly. Cover clips keep your above ground pool's cover in place and helps reduce the wear and tear on a winter cover from wind damage.

Air Pillows

These rugged 16-gauge vinyl Air Pillows absorb freezing water’s pressure and helps protect your pool walls. The Air Pillow also reduces excess rain, snow, and leaves on your winter cover. Use an air pillow under your winter cover and it will also make draining the water off the top of your cover much easier.

Wall Bags

These handy Wall Bags help hold your cover down in high winds and protect it from wind whip and damage. Our bags are made of heavy-gauge vinyl and are easily filled with water using a garden hose. They are designed to lie on top of the cover around the inside perimeter of your pool. Rugged grommets on top of each bag allow you to fasten them to your covers' cable.

Winter Cover Seal

The Winter Cover Seal for Above Ground Swimming Pools will help eliminate damage to your winter cover during high winds and harsh winter weather. Easy to install our cover seal only takes minutes to install and can be done by one person. This is a very simple solution to keep the wind from getting under your winter cover and causing damage and premature wear and tear.

Cover Pump

Cover Pumps are used to remove the water from your pool cover. They are available in manual models where you will have to monitor the pumps progress and unplug it when the water is off. Or you can get an automatic cover pump which senses when water is on the cover and cuts itself on and off automatically. All cover pumps are 110v.

Skimmer Cover

Skimmer Cover snap-on closure system protects your skimmer from freeze damage and saves thousands of gallons of water a year. Simply replace your existing skimmer plate with the Aquador fuse plate and snap on the plastic lid.

Skimmer Guard

The Skimmer Guard is designed to absorb the expansion of the freeze, allowing your skimmer to last throughout the winter undamaged. Just place the Skimmer Guard into your skimmer to absorb any expansion caused by freezing water. The freezing water will actually compress the Skimmer Guard instead of expanding outward and cracking your skimmer.

The recommended amount of cover clips for your pool is 66.
