Questions & Answers about Solar Pool Covers
Can I cut a solar pool cover to fit my pool, and does cutting it void the warranty?
Yes, you can and usually should cut your solar cover to fit your pool, and cutting it does not void the warranty. Solar covers are sold in standard rectangular, round, and oval shapes, and most pools especially those with steps, benches, curves, or irregular shapes require trimming. Manufacturers expect this.
To cut your cover: first, lay it on the pool (bubble side down) and let it rest for a few hours to relax any folds or creases. Then trace the shape of your pool with a marker and use sharp scissors or a utility knife to trim. Start by cutting less than you think you need you can always remove more material, but you cannot add it back. For pools with steps or separate areas, many owners cut the cover into two or more sections for easier handling. Warranties cover manufacturing defects (such as delamination or bubbles separating from the base layer), not cuts made for sizing.
(Found & vetted by BackyardCityPools.com)Does the bubble side go down or up when placing the solar blanket on the pool?
Bubbles always go DOWN, toward the water. This is the single most commonly asked question about solar pool covers, and the answer is consistent across every manufacturer and pool expert. The bubbles are air pockets that act like tiny greenhouses they absorb heat from the sun, trap it, and transfer it directly into the pool water through conduction. For that process to work, the bubbles must be in contact with the water.
If you install the cover upside down (bubbles facing up), two problems occur: (1) the heat gets trapped in the bubbles with nowhere to go, so your pool does not warm up, and (2) the bubbles can overheat and burst or peel away from the base layer, significantly shortening the life of your cover. Always smooth side up, bubble side down.

Solar pool covers, or solar blankets, work by allowing sunlight during the day to heat the water and and the cover, itself, creates an insulating barrier to prevent heat loss into the cool night air. Similar to bubble wrap, they float bubble-side down, reducing evaporation and thermal loss of heat. A pool with a solar cover can see higher pool water temperature by up to 15 degrees.

How long does a solar pool cover typically last?
A solar pool cover typically lasts between 2 to 5 years, with 3 years being the average. Cheaper, thinner, covers may last only 1 to 2 seasons, while higher-quality, thicker, can last up to 5+ years with proper care.
- UV Expososure & Head - Intense sunshine and time in the sun breaks down the plastic over time
- Proper Chemical Balance - Chlorine and pH levels that are too high or too low accelerate deterioration.
- Cover Maintenance - Regularly cleaning the cover and storing it in the shade when not in use significantly extends its life.
What color solar pool cover is best: clear, blue, or silver?
Color affects how a solar cover performs, and the best choice depends on your goals:
- Clear covers Allow the most sunlight to pass through directly into the water, which means faster and greater heat gain. However, because they let more light through, they offer less protection from UV rays that break down pool chemicals. Best for maximizing temperature increase.
- Blue covers The most common color. They absorb and trap heat from sunlight while also blocking some UV rays, which helps protect your pool chemicals from degrading as quickly. A good balance between heating and chemical protection.
- Silver / Space Age covers Reflect heat back into the pool rather than allowing as much new heat in. These are the best at retaining heat already in the water and are ideal for cooler climates or for overnight use, but they may not heat the pool as dramatically as clear covers on a sunny day.
For most homeowners, a blue cover offers the best all-around performance. If your primary goal is maximum heating and your pool water chemistry is well-maintained, a clear cover may give you better results.

The ideal solar pool cover thickness is generally 12-mil to 16-mil (or 400-600 microns), balancing durability, heat retention, and handling ease. Thicker (16-mil) covers offer superior heat retention and longevity, especially in colder climates, while lighter (8 to12-mil) covers offer easier handling. Thicker covers are best for colder climates, windy areas, and long-term durability, though heavier to move, and often requiring a solar reel. 8-mil solar blankets are good for warmer climates as it has less heat retention and ease of handling and used less on the pool. 12-mil is the happy medium between heat retention, durability and ease of use.

Benefits of Solar Pool Covers
- Reduces Evaporation - A solar blanket cover can cut water evaporation (water loss) up to 95 percent.
- Retains Heat - When the sun sets and the night air cools, heat in your pool water is lost. A solar blanket floating on the water keeps much of that heat from dissipating. If you heat the water with a gas or electric pool heater, then this will save you a boat load of money as well.
- Keep Bugs and Debris Out - Although it's not their primary purpose, solar blankets do shield your pool from bugs and debris such as leaves and twigs. Use a leaf blower and/or a hand skimmer to remove the leaves and other debris before removing the solar blanket.

Solar Pool Covers or Solar Blankets & Reels to Heat your Pool Water
A Solar Pool Cover is the least expensive way to keep your pool water warm extend the length of your swimming season. They are also called solar blankets. They resemble giant sheets of bubble wrap. The bubbles trap heat from the sun and keeps the heat in the pool, keeping the pool water temperature warm and inviting.
Solar covers float freely on top of a pool without tie-downs or anchors to hold them in place. Removing a solar cover is easy, just pull it off and store it. This job can be a bit sloppy - imagine folding a giant wet blanket by yourself. Recruiting a helper to roll or fold it up or the aid of a solar cover reel makes the task much easier. Solar covers are usually folded and stored or rolled-up on a large reel, covered, and wheeled out of the way.

Heat in the water is lost primarily (up to 60%) by evaporation. 30% is lost due to radiation to cooler air. Their main purpose is to trap the heat of the water under the cover and prevent heat from escaping into the cool night air and prevent water evaporation. They work equally as well on both Above Ground and In Ground Swimming Pools. Solar Blankets extend the swimming season and save money on chemicals and water replacement due to reduced water evaporation.
They are ideal for use in sunny climates because the more heat they can gather, the longer they can extend the swim season. Solar pool covers can keep the water temperature, 10-15 degrees when used. It is important to remember that, although any cover will reduce some of the debris that enters a pool, solar pool covers are not designed specifically for cleanliness, nor are they considered safety covers. These solar blankets should be completely removed from the pool before swimmers enter the water.

Useful Tips for your Solar Pool Cover
- Bubble side goes down! There is more of the solar cover that will touch the water and the surface tension helps hold the cover on the water. Also the sunlight seems to get focused by these bubbles like lots of little magnifying glasses. The flat side goes up. This allows for fallen debris and dirt to be easily removed when needed and to not catch in between the bubbles.
- Running the pump and filter system while the solar cover is on the water is absolutely safe.
- If possible, leave a few inch extra flap of cover near the skimmer. Put the flap over the skimmers door (weir) and you can push debris into the skimmer before removing
- DO NOT leave the solar cover on grass or other plants. It will burn them up.
- DO NOT use the cover after shocking the pool. High concentrations of chlorine can damage it.
- When in extended periods of time on no use (Winter or Hot part of summer) Let cover dry, roll/fold up cover and store in cool dry place. Cover it when on a reel.
- Cut the cover into smaller rectangle if you have a LARGE pool without a reel. It makes the cover easier to take on/off and easier to store.
- You can trim the solar pool blanket to fit In-Ground pools that are not rectangular or have curves with a pair of scissors.
